How Long Does Amoxicillin Take To Treat Enlarged Tonsil?

My 12 year old daughter has had an enlarged tonsil for about three weeks now. No sore throat. No fever. About a month ago she had a cold and itchy throat. Then her throat hurt and I noticed her tonsil was enlarged so I took her to the doctor since she is susceptible to strep. The doctor gave her amoxicillian. She finished the dosage and the tonsil is still enlarged but no redness or throat pain. How long should we wait until we go back to the doctor?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain as your daughter had sore throat which was suspected to be due to bacterial (streptococcus) infection and she was medicated and got relieved of pain and discomfort but one thing that I would like to tell you that if she had cold and flu symptoms along with sore throat it could be more commonly due to viral infection..

The other part of the question is that as the infection must have got reduced the symptoms of pain has disappeared but it takes comparatively a bit longer time for the swelling to subside and will gradually reduce..

One thing that should be taken into notice that children have comparatively larger tonsils so you need to take care that whether the tonsils are really swollen or not..

I would suggest you to consult a Paediatrician and get a check up done so that he can rule out whether the tonsils are swollen or not and if swollen what is the reason behind it..

Few remedies can be done that can help in reducing swelling are..

Doing warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day..

Boil a pinch of turmeric with milk and give her bed time for 5 days as it has anti bacterial properties..

Avoid spicy and hard foods..

Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration..

In case if the tonsils are still enlarged and does not regress in size then there are chances that the enlargement is due to some unknown allergies and if she get repeated episodes of sore throat and difficulty in swallowing and pain then in case of chronic enlargements removal of tonsils or tonsillectomy can be advised..

Hope your query is solved..
