How Long Can A Patient Have Bleeding From A Scab Coming Off After A TURP Procedure?

my husband had TURP 8 weeks ago and has done GREAT. Today he called me and looking in the toilet he urinated cranberry colored urine, no clots. How long can a patient have bleeding from a scab coming off after the TURP. I have him drinking lots of water, he has urinated since the first time with blood and it is still cranberry color. I m an retired RN and I know that even if I would take him to ER they would just tell him to drink drink drink!!! As long as there is no clots I m not calling the doctor unless it last longer than 48 hours.

Hello,

It may take time 3-4 week to recover. After having a TURP, it's normal to occasionally notice some blood in your urine. Around a week or two after the operation, the amount of blood may increase as the scab on your prostate falls off.

Drinking plenty of fluids will help flush any blood or small blood clots out of your bladder. If you observe:

1. a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above
2. severe pain while urinating
3. an inability to urinate
4. persistently severe or worsening blood in your urine then please consult your doctor immediately he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
