How Long After Miscarriage Will The Pregnancy Test Show Negative?

I tested positive for a pregnancy test then got in an accident 2 day later and that night woke up with really bad cramps and there was blood everywhere and blood clots in my underwear... how long would it take to show negative on a pregnancy test after a miscarriage?

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

The time period between a miscarriage and a negative urinary pregnancy test is variable, and differs from woman to woman. It can be anywhere between 1 week to 6 weeks. There are many factors which can contribute to this – it depends on how far into your pregnancy you were, for e.g. if miscarriage happened at 5-6 weeks, the urine pregnancy test will become negative sooner, than when the woman miscarried at say 12 weeks.

It also depends on if the miscarriage was a partial miscarriage or complete miscarriage. In complete miscarriage, the hormone levels fall faster, hence urine pregnancy test becomes negative sooner, than compared to a partial pregnancy where there are still some foetal products left inside the womb contributing to a marginally elevated HCG level. From what you have mentioned it looks like a complete miscarriage

The best way is by doing 3-4 serial blood tests to check for HCG hormone. These tests are done 48 hours apart. If the serum HCG levels are falling then it is a miscarriage, and it will give a rough idea of the decreasing level of hormone in the body and the rate at which the hormone is falling, so you can predict in what time period the hormone would be negligible.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
