How Is Severe Pain In The Lower Back Region Relieved?

I had lowe back pain a month or so ago and it had come on all of a sudden. The doctor said it was probably just a pulled muscle and gave me a steroid and exercises to do. Pain subsided after a week and all was good again until today. I was walking down the stairs and as soon as my foot hit the first stair, instant burning and pain in my lower back again and now I can hardly walk without being in severe pain! Ibuprofen isn t even touching the pain!! Is this something that I should have checked immediately or is it going to be another wasted trip to the doctor??

General Surgeon 's  Response
Perhaps first episode was warning sign of of impending slipped disc which erroneously labelled as pulled muscle and steroid and exercises helped marginally. The description of pain now along burning sensation suggest Neuralgia. Please seek a Neurologist with an MRI of back done at the earliest.
