How Is Hydrocodone Different From Acetaminophen?

My doctor prescribed oxycodone HCL 5 mg tablet for the severe back pain I used to have hydrocodone – acetaminophen 5–325. What is the difference between the two? I just have a prescription for the oxycodone and it knocks me out. I think the hydrocodone – acetaminophen worked better. Is this possible? I am not supposed to take aspirin products and I wondered if the hydrocodone – acetaminophen is aspirin or Tylenol?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hydrocodone is an opiate (narcotic) analgesic prescribed for the severe pain whereas Acetaminophen is a non-opiate pain reliever and a fever reducer and which is used to treat many conditions such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers. This combination of these medications is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. This combination works better than when used alone. This combination does not contain Aspirin. Tylenol is a branded formulation of Acetaminophen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
