How Effective Is Bite Guard To Avoid Sucking Of Fingers?

My six year old son sucks his right index finger. I have tried everything and I researched a Tguard. Do you recommend this? I also looked into one of those bite guards they put in but they look painful. He still has teeth coming in. Should I wait. Dr is concerned about his bite.
