How Can Weight Gain After Taking Gabapentin Be Managed?

I have osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis. My previous doctor took me off norco and put me on gabapentin. My current doctor has increased that gabapentin dose. Since I ve started taking gabapentin I ve gained weight, my left leg has decreased functionality and now, since the increase, my feet, ankles and legs are swollen.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Gabapentin will not cause the swelling or weight gain. Conditions that cause edema or fluid accumulation like cardiac, liver and kidney dysfunction should be ruled out. Please be advised to follow up with the ER to undergo EKG, echocardiogram, complete metabolic profile.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
