Welcome to HCM!
I have reviewed the lab parameters you sent. Everything looks within range with the exception of your
HDL is slightly low (the protein carrier that takes cholesterol out of the blood so it doesn't attach to the arterial wall.) However, since your
total cholesterol and bad cholesterol or
LDL are so low, the ratios lower any risk from a slightly low HDL. Current guidelines for a healthy female with only weight as a risk factor are commonly accepted as total cholesterol 40
Fasting blood sugar at 86 is well within normal. A fasting sugar of 100-124 represents prediabetes or
impaired glucose tolerance. A fasting sugar of 125 or above 125 is diagnostic of diabetes and should be repeated to confirm diagnosis. As you can see, your blood sugar is fine.
Your diet sounds well rounded with the exception of calcium, vitamin D and fiber standing out as being low. If you were my client I would suggest a vitamin D test and if low, replete. Try to get calcium in your diet if your diet history is a true one and you just forgot about milk, yogurt, cheese. I prefer food sources rather than pills as too much calcium is not good either. Also, pay attention to getting your essential fatty acids. The one commonly missed is
omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid which may be found in the following foods:
Sources of Omega 3’s include flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, soybean and its products such as tofu and tempeh. Walnuts, and dark green veggies, such as kale, collards, chard, parsley, and cereal grasses (wheat & barley grasses), are also good sources. This is because all green (chlorophyll-rich) foods contain Omega-3 FA in their chloroplasts.
The other essential fatty acid is
linoleic acid an omega 6 fatty acid. Foods high in this essential fatty acid are:Sources of Omega-6 fatty acids include nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, and dairy
Both essential fatty acids need to be consumed daily for your optimal health.
Now, the heading says you want to know how to lose weight with a broken ankle. I am assuming you have already discussed your limitations with your doctor. There are many ways you can lose weight. Since your walking ability is impaired, you can still focus on activity that can be done in a seated position. Examples are arm exercises, thigh exercises, butt exercises. There are plenty of videos out that demonstrate "sit-fit" types of exercises.
You might even find some excellent demonstrations of exercises you can do on my fitness board. You can find this free infographic site by searching for virtualnutritionalsynergy on pinterest.com.
I could give you some diet ideas if you like. Feel free to write me at bit.ly/askkathyshattler. Healthy Regards, Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
