How Can Viral Meningitis Be Detected?

Is it possible to have a viral meningitis that doesn t show up in a lumbar puncture? My adult daughter has had a severe illness several times that mimics meningitis, but l.p. does not confirm it. It s very distressing because she has so much pain, and it has happened several times and no one seems to know what it is. I don t even know what kind of specialist she should go to. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Krista

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It may be possible in occasional cases where there can be meningitis with a normal spinal tap.

But there are newer modalities of fluorescent tests, ELISA and so forth along with high-resolution MRI which will help for sure.

I request you to consult in follow up with all details of symptoms and reports as scanned copy to guide further precisely.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
