Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it possible to have a viral meningitis that doesn t show up in a lumbar puncture? My adult daughter has had a severe illness several times that mimics meningitis, but l.p. does not confirm it. It s very distressing because she has so much pain, and it has happened several times and no one seems to know what it is. I don t even know what kind of specialist she should go to. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Krista

How Can Viral Meningitis Be Detected?
Hi, It may be possible in occasional cases where there can be meningitis with a normal spinal tap. But there are newer modalities of fluorescent tests, ELISA and so forth along with high-resolution MRI which will help for sure. I request you to consult in follow up with all details of symptoms and reports as scanned copy to guide further precisely. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
