How Can Vertigo With Dizziness Be Treated?

My husband has had dizziness fir the last 2 days. He was checked out at the hospital about a month ago and was fine. The right vein in his neck is 100% clogged but his cardiologist said it could not be unclogged since it was 100% blocked but the left side was ok and he had plenty of blood flow. Vertigo runs in his family. Our son has McNear s disease and our daughter also suffers from vertigo as well as my husband s mom.I don t remember h is lasting this long. He isn t dizzy when he lies down. Any suggestions?

Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

His symptoms seem to be related to low blood flow or orthostatic intolerance.

The fact that his symptoms improve when lying down is a strong argument in favor of the above mentioned causes. Besides, you should know that vertigo is related to the vertebral arteries and the blood flow in them. A low blood flow, caused by narrowing of these arteries, is more probable to cause troubles when it is combined with orthostatic hypotension. This can also explain why his symptoms improve when lying down.

Coming to this point, I would recommend a close monitoring of his blood pressure values in sitting and standing up position. It is also important performing some tests:

-complete blood count for anemia
-Head up Tilt test for orthostatic hypotension
-a Doppler ultrasound of the vertebral arteries. An angio CT scan of the cerebral arteries would give more information on the blood flow in the vertebral arteries and also in the collateral circulation, considering his clogged carotid artery (which is asymptomatomatic now).

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards, Dr. Aida
