How Can Vasovagal Syncope Be Treated?

My Mom suffers from Vasovagel. She is 87 years old and passes out minutes after starting to black out. Is there anything, like ammonia/smelling salts that can stop this from happening. She has had her medicine changed over and over again, with NO good results. HELP.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

My opinion is you should first check for postural hypotension, Hb., and cardiac activity by 2D ECHO and ECG. And accordingly start the treatment. We should rule out heart disease whether the syncopal attacks are due to heart disease or not. Ammonia smelling is not recommended.

Consult a medicine specialist.

Thank you!
