General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As stated, it is great that he has recovered a lot after the ailment. Although the bladder retention is not a regular phenomenon, but sometimes it is also seen in such cases. Moreover, we also have to rule out the enlargement of prostate, which is a common finding for urinary retention at this age.

For swelling and joint pain, let us concentrate more on his mobility. Let him move, walk as much to his comfort. Please rule out a arthritic cause and uric acid levels in blood as well.

Hope this helps you.
