Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Swelling On The Face Due To A Tooth Abscess Be Treated?
I HAVE A TOOTH ABSCESS. MY FACE WAS SWOLLEN AND I COULD NOT SPEAK. I WAS RECOMMENDED TO TAKE A Z PACK SINCE I AM ALLERGIC TO PENICILLIN AND OTHER MEDICATIONS. THE SWELLING IS DIMINISHING AND I AM ABLE TO SPEAK NOW. I SEE THAT THE SWELLING IS GOING DOWN AND I CAN EAT SOFT FOOD ON THAT SIDE OF MY MOUTH. MY DENTIST RECOMMENDED A SURGEON TO DRAIN THE ABSCESS. THIS IS BEFORE HE GAVE ME THE ANTIBIOTICS. I AM GOING TO SEE HIM IN A FEW DAYS. DO I STILL NEED TO SEE A SURGEON. I AM NOW ABLE TO TALK AND EAT SOFT FOOD.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of swelling on the face due to a tooth abscess which seems to be due to facial space infection. The antibiotics drug may take 48 hours for its effect but if swelling doesn't start decreasing after 48 hours then consult dentist again . Because infection can spread to other parts of the oral cavity like floor of the mouth or tongue.
I would suggest you to :-
- Do warm compresses 2-3 times a day and have soft food.
- Do warm saline rinses several times a day .
- Take proper rest .
- Drink plenty of water .
Doctor may prescribe stronger antibiotics (cephalexin) , extend the period of antibiotic course, or may order X-ray of abscess tooth to find out other cause if there is any. If there is any irritant that is not letting the swelling to come down then doctor will remove that.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
