How Can Swelling In The Throat And Stomach Ache Be Treated?

I recently threw up after eating some bad food and my nose is plugged up really bad. My throat is swollen and sore now my stomach is still not fully settled(feeling queasy). But I ve taken Mucinex to help with the congestion. I m drinking water to stay hydrated. Usually I can ride this sort of thing out and let it run its course but I m concerned that I m not ready to go to work in a few hours I don t know what to do.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your clinical history, drink plenty of [ORS] fluid prepared at home and take OTC drug [Omeprazole] once a day to control sore throat and check your body temperature every 6 hours and if elevated then you may discuss with your treating doctor to add a course of antibiotic.

To prevent food poisoning in future, follow measures like this:

1) Wash your hands, utensils and food handling places often. Wash your hands well with warm, soapy water before and after handling or preparing food. Use hot, soapy water to wash utensils, cutting boards and other surfaces you use.

2) Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat foods. When shopping, preparing food or storing food, keep raw meat, poultry, fish and shellfish away from other foods. This prevents cross-contamination.

3) Try to cook foods to a safe temperature. The best way to tell if foods are cooked to a safe temperature is to use a food thermometer. You can kill harmful organisms in most foods by cooking them to the right temperature.

4) Try to freeze perishable foods promptly within two hours of purchasing or preparing them.

5) Throw it out when in doubt. If you aren't sure if food has been prepared, served or stored safely, discard it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
