How Can Swelling In The Ankles Be Treated?

Hi, I have some road rash on my left leg that I got 3 days ago. I also have 3 stitches on the inside of my ankle on the same leg. I kept the road rash and stitched cut covered with gauze for 24 hours, changed the dressing, and had it covered for another 24 hours. At the same time, I was on an airplane and my ankle & foot became swollen. Now 24 hours later, only the ankle is still swollen. I have 2 questions. 1. I had let the road rash air out and create scabs before reading about the benefits of moist wound healing. I have since applied vaseline to get them moist, was that ok? And 2. how much longer should it take for the swelling in my ankle to go away? Thanks!

Hi,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern. You have a traumatic history and swelling is because of that.
Answer to your first question is yes, it is OK to keep your wound soft but same time what ointments you are using must be sterilized. Also wash your wound with sterilized water at least once a day.

Your second question is how much time will it take to subside the swelling. Because you have not mentioned any type of fracture is there,, the inflammatory swelling will subside with in a week. You can also keep your leg elevated on a pillow it will help you to reduce swelling more faster.

Hope the answer to your query. Write us if you feel any assistance is needed more.
