Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Osteoarthritis is common in older and overweight people. It is simply wear and tear on cartilage of weight bearing joints (knee or hip) usually presents with pain and swelling at the end of the day. Osteoarthritis poses a risk for septic arthritis. It is an infectious process which leads to inflammation and joint destruction if not treated on time. If you developed sudden increase of pain, swelling, warmth or redness in your affected knee joint, or have fever, chills and inability to move affected joint you should visit ER. Early diagnosis and treatment is very important for septic arthritis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
