How Can Swelling And Pain In The Knees Be Treated?

I have arthritis in my knee. My knee swells from time to time. This time my knee is swelling and hurts at time when I walk, put wait on it and especially at the end of the day when I have been on my feet working all day. It has also started to hurt down my leg to my feet on the back side. Is all this from the arthritis and will it go away on it on by keeping off my feet so and propping my leg up. I also take Mobic twice a day for the arthritis.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

May I know your age? Is it age related degenerative arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis?

As a preventive measure you should do following:

- Avoid full flexion of knee joint
- If you have overweight, loose weight to reduce knee damage
- Use knee cap/support while walking or running
- Do physiotherapy exercises to make muscles around knee joints strong
- Use western toilet only

For pain relief:

- Apply hot compressions
- Tablet Diclofenac 12 hourly
- Tablet Vitamin D3 weekly
- Tablet calcium daily

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
