How Can Swelling And Pain In The Knees Be Treated?

Hello, I am a 51 yr old female with history of meniscus tears in left knee (3 arthroscopic surgeries) and osteoarthritis. Now, both knees are achy, hard to go up and down stairs. Pain is made worse by either sitting or standing too long. 2.5 weeks ago I fell hard directly onto my left knee below the kneecap, PA said it was bruised. It s swollen now and warm to the touch and hurts all the time. Will they get better?

Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, you need to use more potent analgesics like neproxen or tramadol alongside OTC analgesics like acetaminophen.

MRI of the knee and orthopaedic surgeon review may be needed to discuss surgical options like meniscus repair or knee replacement.

Weight bearing may be avoided and should be discussed with a physiotherapist for surrounding muscles strengthening exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
