Hi,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your husband.

Your patient history suggest the Shingles (Herpes zoster). It depends upon the lesion how much portion has been involved. If the lesion is not spread to much portion of body, he don't need to be on anti viral therapy because it is self healing condition. Now as he had been advised to take medication he must has much aggressive condition.

Therefore, if there is no kidney distress and patient is responding without any problem there is no need to stop medication. If you feel puffy face, ankle swelling you must stop medication and return to ER. If I would have been treating doctor I would have advised prednisone too.
Make sure he is properly hydrated, it is helpful in both the cases Shingles as well as kidney.

Hope my answer will help you, also write to us further if you feel any further assistance.
