Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Severe Pain In The Neck And Back Be Treated?
I HAVE HAD NECK AND BACK PAIN FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS NOW, BUT IN THE PAST 8 MONTHS IT HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT THAT I CAN NOT TURN MY NECK TO EITHER SIDE. THE DOCTOR HAS TRIED MEDICATIONS, PHYSICAL THERAPY AND EVEN LIDOCAINE SHOTS INTO MY NECK AND SHOULDERS AND NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK, IS THEIR A TEST I SHOULD ASK FOR OR A TREATMENT OPTION I CAN TRY
Because the pain is lasting so long and it does not improve with treatment, it is a good idea to have some examinations done. I would recommend you to have x-rays of the neck to see for any structural problems (deformity) or other problems of the bones. If the x-rays are not able to find the reason for the pain sometimes CT scans of the area might be recommended. According to the findings the doctor should be able to decide on treatment.
If all the examinations show no problems with the bones then medications to help with chronic pain might be helpful like amitryptiline or gabapentine. These are medications that need prescription from the doctor and also good monitoring and follow up.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
