How Can Severe Pain In The Knees Be Treated?

I was prescribed Diclofenac Sodium Topical Gel 1% by my surgeon that performed a knee replacement on me a year ago. The pain wakes me up at night crying and my awake quality of life is not as good as it was before surgery. I had a gastric bypass in 2007 and lost 160 lbs. my gastric surgeon gave me a list of NSAIDS that I could not use. I remember Aspercream being on the list. I did use the Gell for about a week and experienced diareaia and just an overall tired feeling. I had a RNY Distal bypass and only have 5 feet of small intestine. Should i keep using this topical medication? Oh I m 65.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. You might be having osteoarthritis of knee joint. Pain killers like diclofenac will relieve pain for sometime which will recurr again. Permanent solution is knee replacement surgery. Im sure your quality of life will improve after that. I understand you have had RNY bypass etc. So it requires certification by anesthesiologists whether the surgery can be performed.
