How Can Severe Pain In The Hips And Swelling In The Ankles Be Treated?

I have been to the dr and they diagnosed me with IT band. I am in so much pain, but now it is not just my hip. It is both hips, right thumb and left arm. My ankles are swelling and my neck is so sore and stiff. The pain is getting out of control and I don t know what to do.. Are my Dr.s incompetent or what?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From your description of symptoms, I feel you may be suffering from polyarthritis whose etiology is yet to be known. IT band may be a probable cause of your hip pains but it may not explain all the symptoms you are presenting. Other possible causes may include:
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Gout
• Psoriatic arthritis
Osteoarthritis and others

At times, it may be difficult to know the exact cause of such symptoms.
Tests that may help include: rheumatoid factor, ASLO, full blood count, ESR, uric acid level. Treatment options for such pains may include: different lines of pain drugs depending on pain intensity, myorelaxants, steroid shots occasionally, physiotherapy and others depending on the identified cause. Many of these options may be used together for better results.

I will suggest you see a rheumatologist for a complete medical evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
