How Can Severe Cramps In The Legs Be Treated?

I was prescribed 10mg tablet Hydroxyzine HCL today for Muscle Cramps. Years ago I took 325mg Quinine Sulfate when I got a cramp & poof it was gone - loved them as I only took them when there was a problem and an Rx of 30 tablets usually lasted a year or more. I've been taking 10mg Bactrim three times a day as a preventative and sometimes still get a leg cramp during the night. From what I'm reading about this new tablet it isn't for cramps at all. I weigh 130# and I am 70 years old - very active.

Hello,

1. Since symptoms are cute on chronic, visit your Primary care physician for symptoms approach, as follow:
- rule out diabetes, calcium/salt deficiency and treat accordingly.
- most cramps in legs are due to calcium deficiency, in chronic or resistant cases, give Vit. E- long-term therapy.
- Cramps should be differentiated for claudication which is exercise related

2. If getting time and again make sure to exclude causes like vigorous exercise, trauma to the muscle, keeping the leg in an awkward position for too long.
Make sure to take dark, leafy green vegetables, nuts, and seeds, fortified tofu, yogurt with banana [good combination of calcium, potassium, calcium] to help with muscle cramps.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Munish Sood
