How Can Severe Cough In A Child Be Treated?

Hello Doctor, my child is having severe wet cough since 2 days. we are giving her Amrodil syrup. Since, we started to give this syrup, her cough has increased heavily instead of reducing. She vomits at least 2-3 times in the night due to severe coughing. Could you guide me, do we continue with this or can we switch over to some other medicine? Many thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I appreciate your concern for your child.

Severe cough needs to be evaluated in detail so I would advise you for a battery of investigation like CBC, ESR, CRP, liver function test or an X ray chest to rule out lung Infection.

She may require a course of antibiotics under medical supervision.

simce Ambrodil is not effective in reducing cough so I would advise you for Honitus cough syrup or Chlorphenaramime maleate syrup for immediate relief.

You can give her honey with few drops of ginger juice which will help by soothing her throat.
Nasal saline drops are advisable if she is having running nose.

Hope you will find my answer useful and informative, please feel free to ask for follow up question I will be happy to help you.
Best wishes
