How Can Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Be Treated?

Hello, I have recently been diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and my doctor suggested taking Ursodiol for helping with some of my symptoms. I have been doing some researching of my own and Ursodiol is only effective for PBC patients, is that correct? I have not seeing anything that it would help with my PSC. I also have Crohn s disease that was diagnosed in 1996. I have concerns taking this medication also by it not being FDA approved. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ursodiol has proven effectiveness to improve liver function and biochemistry in primary sclerosing cholangitis. Ursodiol is usually given in low doses to PSC patients and therefore side effects are also expected to be minimal.

So please be advised to continue Ursodiol as prescribed. Other medications that are immunosuppressive like steroids, Methotrexate etc., may also be used to treat PSC depending on the severity and progression of the disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal,
