How Can Post Nasal Drip Be Treated?

Hi. I took zertec allergy medicine early this afternoon, but not sure this is allergies. I also took mucus relief guafenisin. Lots of post nasal drip and feeling like I can t breath though I actually am nasally clear. I have two forms of night time meds which I usually avoid cause I don t need all of the elements. But wondered if it would help tonight. Last night was lots of post nasal drip dispite or because of mucus relief. One night time med uses is doxylamine succinate, and the daytime one uses phenylephrine. I tried to look them up. I know Benadryl makes me hyper so I m a little Leary of the doxylamine as its listed as a sleep med. so that leaves the daytime med. I wasn t sure if the zertec already being an antihistame means I should avoid any other decongestants completely. Argh. Am going to try to sleep without any more but if that fails, I wanted to make sure of what else to try. Thank you, melissa

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Treatment of postnasal drip depends on what’s causing it. Antibiotics can clear up a bacterial infection. However, green or yellow mucus is not proof of a bacterial infection.
Colds can also turn the mucus these colors, and they are caused by viruses, which don't respond to antibiotics.
Some advices that I can give to you are :
-Use antihistamines and decongestants
-Use steroid nasal spray
-Take a medication such as guaifenesin (Mucinex).
-Use saline nasal sprays or irrigation, like a neti pot, to flush mucus, bacteria, allergens, and other irritating things out of the sinuses.
-Turn on a vaporizer or humidifier to increase the moisture in the air.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
