How Can Persistent Cough Be Treated?

My son has a persistent cough. It started about three days ago, the mucous is clear. It started out yellow, then green, but once he started antibiotics, it turned clear. But the coughing is not subsiding and even seems worse. He was prescribed promethazine for the cough, but it doesn t seem t help. Any ideas?

Hi, thank you for trusting Healthcare Magic.
I understand your concern.

Cough actually is body mechanism in throwing the virus and dirts away from our respiratory system. It happen as a manifestation of allergy and inflammation.

To treat cough in children, I may use drugs containing ambroxols, n-acetylcysteine, or guaifenesin / glyceryl guaiacolate. These three types of content are safe for the child.

Beside using drugs, cough can be reduced with traditional medicines that have been shown to reduce inflammation that occurs, such as ginger, honey (when children are over 1 year), and echinacea

You can also do the following:
1. Allow your son to rest and elevate his head using more pillows to make it easier to breathe when cough strikes..
2. Use a humidifier in the child's room to make it easier to breathe and relax.
3. If your son wakes up while coughing, give him a warm drink. Warm drinks can dilute the mucus that sticks in the throat.

If this isn't helping, I suggest you to consult to the nearest pediatrician.

Hopefully your son will get better soon.
