Hi,

95% of all LUPUS patients have symptoms of joint pain may be arthritis or arthralgia. Usually Lupus does not cause long lasting damage to the joints, still the symptoms of pain can be definitely agonizing. As you are describing that your lumps in your joints are told to be due to ganglion nerves. Normally, these types of lumps are called ganglion cysts.

Usually, these lumps are variable in size ranging from a size of pea to size of walnut. These are fluid filled cysts and are usually harmless. However, sometimes these can press the nerve and cause pain. These are usually present in joints of hands, wrists, fingers, elbow, and feet. However, other joints may also be involved. Movement of the affected joint will cause discomfort and swelling may increase resulting in more discomfort.

Some ganglion cysts may shrink themselves and disappear of their own. Hence treatment may consist of giving rest to affected joint, use of ice packs, warm moist cloth compresses etc. OTC analgesics like Tylenol or Advil may help in relieving pain and discomfort.

Simple observation, if there is no symptom, may be needed, as some times these shrink and resolve themselves. However, if the symptoms are more agonizing and not relieved by simple home remedies, then treatment may be by drainage of fluid by a needle or surgical excision by your health care provider is required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
