How Can Pain Due To Pancreatic Dysfunction Be Treated?

My daughter has A pancreatic condition. She takes a few medications and when she is in pain we have Motrin 400 mg and if that doesn t cut it 5 mg of Norco 10 325. When she has a bout with pancreatitis we restrict any food and drinks except for clear liquids like broth Sprite and Gatorade. Once the pain starts we started off with Motrin if the Motrin does not help she gets Norco but only as needed. She had her last Norco today at around six. And then four hours later Motrin. I tried to get a hold of the doctor on call but he seem to be too tired to take care of my child s needs please help

Hello.

I can understand your concern. Pain due to pancreatic condition can be quite severe.

Anything taken by mouth sets off the pancreatic pain. Hence, even if you give pain killers by mouth, it might not entirely help. Your daughter needs to be nil by mouth atleast for 24 hrs during a boit of pancreatitis. Such prolonged fasting adds to the dehydration caused by pancreatitis itself.

I am afraid that intravenous access, fluids and also analgesics by the the same route are the only good solutions for relief during a bout of pancreatitis. Apart from that you can try the anal route for analgesics which are available as suppositories.

Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
