How Can Pain And Swelling In The Scrotum Be Treated?

On Saturday afternoon (3 days ago) I had my Gall Bladder removed via laparoscopic surgery. After surgery I was hospitalized 3 additional days and during my stay in the hospital was given many IVs including saline, antibiotics, and a bolus (because of elevated Creatinine). Two days days before discharge I was given a Foley catheter because of difficulty urinating. I do have an appointment to see the urologist in two more days to hopefully remove the cath. For the the last couple days in the hospital and now here at home my scrotum has been and currently is extremely swollen (especially on the right side) and is quite painful to the touch. I was told by a nurse that this could be due to all the IV fluids. But why is the right side of the scrotum so swollen and sensitive compared to the left side and how long will it take for the swelling to go down? And what can I do in the meantime to reduce the pain & swelling?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1) If you are lying down for a longer period it causes dependent deem of the scrotum but is usually bilateral
2) Get your albumin level checked, low level may be the cause for swelling
3) Get urine routine and culture to look for infection
4) Painful scrotal swelling suggests infection like funiculitis right cord which will need anti inflammatory drugs or antibiotics if the urine culture is positive for any micro organism.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
