How Can One Be Persuaded To Give Up Alcohol After Recovering From A Stroke?

My dad had a stoke attack in august, he quickly recovered in a public hospital but when he was discharged his health deteriorated, the vein had burst again. Then he spent one week in a private clinic where he recovered well. Since last year he has been drinking beer and some whisky. Well this year he has been drinking beer everyday, he caught a cold like 3 days ago and he has been drinking whisky with lemon for 3 days, i told him to stop but he doesn t want to listen to me we even had an argument. I m worried it might affect him. How can i make him understand? His blood pressure and sugar level is okay though. Help please :(

Hi,

Ok, first some general information about alcohol level. 12 ounce (200 ml or so) beer or 30cc of spirits is not that bad in general BUT often causes mild elevation of blood pressure the next day and this can be a risk in some people for cardiovascular/stroke problems. The risks go up with more alcohol and the risk categories are with really big increases in alcohol. This is more than 4 drinks a day is some risk.

10-20 is definitely a risk and higher than that is still pretty common. Let's say there are definite reasons to not drink. What you are asking about is motivational interviewing techniques. You first say that you want the best for him. You ask him what some health issues he finds are the best for him. Like not having more strokes. Then, if there is a rise in BP with the drinking ask if he thinks there is any chance the two could be related and point up the potential issues with continuing to drink.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
