How Can Mosquito Bites On The Arms, Head And Face Be Treated?

My grandson has been exposed to and has probably 150-200 mosquito bites on his arms, head and face after a backyard sleepout last night. I am concerned because I have heard on the news the presence of insects infected with west Nile virus in our area in Utah. We are using Benedryl spray for the discomfort, and he s done well in not scratching the bites. Please advise what symptoms I should watch for and if I should be concerned. He is a healthy 8 1/2 year old boy.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If there is any allergic reaction to bite, you can give Benadryl. West Nile virus virus can present with fever, headache and painful rashes. Watch for any fever with rashes and in case of symptoms consult a physician, West Nile fever is not that much severe and it is a self limiting disease in most of the cases.

Wishing all the best.

Thanks.
