How Can Mastoiditis Be Treated?

My family Dr. has diagnoised with an MRI that I have mastoiditis. An appoint has been made with an ENT but my appointment is 11 days away. It has been bothering me since January 28th. I saw my Dr. on Jan 30th and was treating me for sinus infection. I had steriod shot plus two nasal sprays. On Feb 8th I went to Dr. again an said my ear was red and put me on antibiotic. On Feb 13th I went to Dr. again and said ear was not red but cloudy. Took and MRI and said would refer me to ENT. As I stated I now have a appointment for Febuary 28th. Should I wait that long or should I seek alternative. Not having pain but pressure and cannot hear out of that ear. I have had a stiff neck since it started.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Mastoiditis is a rare infection of the mastoid bone of the skull, which is located behind the ear. It is usually the result of untreated ear infections.

Treatment of mastoiditis depends on how far the infection has spread. In its early stages, the disease can easily be treated with a series of antibiotic injections and oral medication.

If antibiotics alone are unsuccessful in treating mastoiditis, some of the bone may need to be removed, a procedure called a mastoidectomy.

Sometimes mastoiditis is difficult to treat because the medication cannot reach the bone, which requires long-term treatment. In some cases, ear tubes are implanted to prevent future ear infections and subsequent mastoiditis.

A surgical procedure known as a myringotomy is also used to drain the middle ear to treat the ear infection.

I do not think you should wait for that long so you should try to consult another doctor at the earliest

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
