How Can Lower Backache And Osteoporosis Be Treated?

Consistent lower back pain. Have osteoporosis of spine and had 3 compression fractures repaired. Was on life support and received a lot of steroids. Also a stem cell transplant recipient and failure. In AML remission. What exercise will help? I have walked and swam. Seems to worsen. Trying to gain as much quality as possible for time left. Sorry, thought this was a free service. I have doctor appt coming up. Was looking for additional input.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this-:

1)Do a clinical examination by your treating Doctor[rheumatologist] and to know current status of your bones do a bone density test.

2)Discuss with your treating Doctor about prescription medications like [Alendronate] and discuss with your [endocrinologist]regarding Hormone therapy.

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this-

1)Do take calcium 1,200 milligrams. Good sources of calcium include
Low-fat dairy products, Dark green leafy vegetables, Canned salmon or sardines with bones, Soy products, such as tofu, Calcium-fortified cereals and orange juice. If you find it difficult to get enough calcium from your diet, consider taking calcium supplements.

2)Do take vitamin D which improves your body's ability to absorb calcium. You can get adequate amounts of vitamin D from sunlight. If your blood levels of vitamin D are low, then you can safely take up to 4,000 IU/L.

3)Exercise can help you build strong bones and slow bone loss. Exercise will benefit your bones no matter when you start, but you'll gain the most benefits if you start exercising regularly when you're young and continue to exercise throughout your life. Combine strength training exercises with weight-bearing exercises. Strength training helps strengthen muscles and bones in your arms and upper spine, and weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, running, stair climbing, skipping rope, skiing and impact-producing sports affect mainly the bones in your legs, hips and lower spine.

Hope that helps
