How Can Laryngitis Be Treated?

Hello, I am a 35 year old teacher and I have had laryngitis this whole school year! the first time it was diagnosed was in October. I took antibiotics and was better for about two weeks. I have had it since then, but it is now gettin progressively worse. What can I do to help this to go away more permanently?

Hello,
Thank you for your query.

I would like to check for vocal cord inflammation /nodules.
Being a teacher necessitates talking loudly. This, over a period of time, causes vocal cord strain.

I believe that the laryngitis episode cause inflammation of the vocal cord which has bit recovered yet due to lack of rest.

*what were your symptoms when you first got it?
*what are your symptoms now?
*what medications did you take?
*have you noticed any voice change before and after the laryngitis?
*do you use chalk or marker?

I recommend :
-an ear nose throat (ENT) consult.
-laryngoscopy
-voice rest for atleast 4 weeks or till healing is complete.
-avoid cold fluids, chalk dust and talking loudly and continuously.
-Gargle with warm (as warm as you can tolerate) salt water.
-hold a wet handkerchief over your nose and mouth to prevent irritation by air pollution while traveling to and from work or while going out
-have a teaspoon of honey twice a day.
-avoid any food items that irritate your throat (citric fruits, spicy food)
-take a vitamin C supplement (500 mg) with a full cup of water for 3 weeks.
-stay well hydrated and avoid extremes of temperature.

Voice rest would mean you avoid teaching. Ease consider my recommendations for a full recovery.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
