How Can Labyrinthitis Be Treated?

I woke up to what I thought was vertigo 5 days ago. After a Dr.s visit on day 3, I was referred to a physical therapist to help with the symptoms. The therapist believes it is Labyrinthitis and wants me to get steroids to help as well as continue with therapy to help my body adapt. My question with either is do they cause mental confusion. I am usually a quick thinker and have to solve complex problems for work but have been struggling with minor things. I am 35 and Male and my symptoms are as follows: Unbalanced, vertigo, tinnitus, mental fogginess, nausea, small muscle spasms on my right side, and sometimes feeling like I am going to faint while sitting. Any help would be great as this is miserable.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Labyrinthitis is an inner ear infection, labyrinth becomes inflamed, this affects your hearing and balance.

The most common symptoms are:
- feeling that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning (vertigo)
- feeling or being sick
- some hearing loss
- feeling you can't stand upright,
- mild headaches
- ringing ears or tinnitus
- ear pain
- changes in vision, such as blurred vision or double vision. The symptoms usually get better after a few weeks.

I suggest you:
- drink plenty of water, little and often to avoid becoming dehydrated
- you should rest in bed to avoid falling and injuring,
- lie still in a comfortable position during an attack – on your side is often best
- avoid alcohol and bright lights
- try to cut out the noise and anything that causes stress from your surroundings, avoid driving.

Medication includes:
- benzodiazepines, corticosteroids.

Contact your GP if symptoms persist or getting worse, such as:
- mental confusion, slurred speech
- weakness or numbness in one part of your body
- a change in the way you usually walk.

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy help retrain your brain and nervous system to compensate for the abnormal signals coming from the vestibular system.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
