Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If your friend is suffering from only insomnia then Thioridazine may help. But if he is having bipolar disorder, then he requires a proper mood stabilizer like lithium or valproate. Lithium is not considered a dangerous drug if your friend is not having other medical complications. It is one of the best mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder. You can consult a nearby psychiatrist for this and get an opinion to start on lithium.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prashant Gohil
