How Can Impaired Sense Of Taste And Smell Be Treated?

i have taken meloxicam for 4 weeks then quit because everything out of a can tasted like metal of some sort. Some other items just taste terrible and some i have no taste at all. It is 3 weeks later (since I stopped), taking Aleve 2 pills 2xday instead. When can I expect to get my taste back and correct sense of smell? also taking levothyroxine - small dosage for 5 years for Hashimotos and hydrochlorothiazide small dose for about 9 months.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of impaired sense of taste and smell which could be due to siede effects of certain medicine and nerve dysfunction like glossopharyngeal.

Need not worry. You should maintain a proper dental hygiene to prevent gingivitis or stomatitis. I would advice use of oral corticosteroids as well because if its due to any allergy it will resume back taste. I would suggest you to visit neurologist once and take medications which lower down autoimmune or nervous system disorder. Take salivary stmulation susbstitutes. Avoid smoking if you are habitual. Bad smell may also occur due to residual infection. Give them diet rich in zinc supplements as that will recover there taste. Chew on sugar free candies.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
