How Can Hiatal Hernia Be Treated?

I have been told I have a sliding hiata hernia. Its been okay untill this weekend. I am having trouble sleeping in any way. I am 66 years old with HBP ,diabetes, over weight and confined to a wheel chair 24/7. I have shortness of breath and pains in chest and down my arms sometimes. Are these normal?

Hello,

As per your clinical history is concerned, please follow like this-

1) Do a clinical examination by your doctor [Gastro] and do a few investigations like [Endoscopy and manometry]

2) Regarding prescription medications, you can discuss with your doctor [Pantoprazole] and OTC antacid like [Gelusil]

3) If already tried medications but no result, then go for [laparoscopic surgery] which will resolve your problem permanently.

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this -

1) Try to eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals.

2) Avoid foods that trigger heartburn, such as chocolate, onions, spicy foods, citrus fruits, and tomato-based foods.

3) Try to avoid alcohol and stop smoking

4) Eat at least three hours before bedtime, and make a regular sleep pattern.

5) Try to lose weight if you're overweight or obese.

6) Elevate the head of your bed six inches (about 15 centimeters).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
