Hi. I m having a major problem with soft fingernails and hair loss. It s been over 2 yrs. since I stopped getting French tips and my nails continue to grow only a little before splitting at the edges and I have to cut them and being so soft and flexible that the top part of the nail begins to peel. I have had an increase in hair loss over the past yr. also and wonder if it s related. I ve had my thyroid checked several times over the last 2 yrs. and have diabetes 2 so I carefully watch what I eat to make sure I m getting enough nutrients,Esp. cacium, magnisium and potassium among other things. I also take a Centrum multivitamin/multimineral and Mega red krill oil daily. My Dr. has me on 5000 IU of Vit D daily along with my other meds. I ve tried adding extra calcium and biotin to my diet without any improvement. Could it be another vitamin deficiency???
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Hair loss and brittle nails could also be a manifestation of iron deficiencyanaemia. Kindly supplement with iron and iron rich foods along with hemopoietic vitamins namely Folic acid and Vitamin B12. Continue with other medications which you are taking. Hope this helps. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S. MBBS., MD.
