Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i am 62 yrs old and just been diagnosed with emphysema. i have not experienced shortness of breath with normal activity, but i have had chest pain/discomfort for some time. what do you think my outlook is? in terms of longevity, and how unpleasant is the last stage of this disease. also would it be worth my while to go to a pulmonologist or other specialist? thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Detailed evaluation and treatment needed. You need long term medications, including steroids and bronchodilators. If you have the habit of smoking, then it is better to stop. Consult a pulmonologist for expert advice.
Thanks.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
