How Can Elevated Blood Pressure Levels Be Treated?

my husband was has extremely high blood pressure...we just found this out...and he started medication today. He needs to lose a significant amount of weight and the atkins diet is one I think he could have success with. Is this diet safe for him with his blood pressure issues? his bp was 196/120
