How Can Elevated TSH Levels Be Treated?

Hello: I m a healthy 66 y.o. caucasian woman with generally great lab results over several years of physicals. However, my TSH readings have been somewhat elevated for several years. I am 5 63/4 tall and 116 lbs, and get at least an hour of weight-bearing aerobic exercise daily. I have Meniere s disease, so I eat very little salt, and only one slice of gluten free bread/day. Recently I began a very low dose of HRT, 100 mg progesterone, and 0.0125 mg. transdermal estradiol/day, in an effort to improve my sleep. It has also virtually stopped my hair loss. I had to cut the original dose of estradiol in half because of breast tenderness. I also have fibrocystic breast tissue. My blood pressure and cholesterol are very good. I also have cold hands and feet quit often, and of course, hearing loss and tinnitus. I generally drink about 2.5 cups of organic soy milk/day. I recently read that my TSH may be low if my iodine intake is low, and wonder if a lack of iodine and the amount of soy I m eating may be contributing to my breast tenderness. Many thanks, Anne LaFrance Medford, OR

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

TSH levels are elevated in a hypothyroidism.
There are medications to treat this diagnosis.I suggest prescribed levothyroxine .
Treatment with Levothyroxine is usually lifelong, but because the dosage you need may change so you should do TSH levels every year.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
