How Can Elevated TSH Levels Be Treated?

I have been diagnosed with an elevated Thyroid and placed on Levothyroxine 25MCG for six weeks. At the end of the six weeks I was retested and my thyroid was still elevated so the doctor wants to increase the dosage. I have been reading and came across graves disease often being the cause of an elevated thyroid. I don t really understand what graves disease is even though I have been researching. I have read the signs of an elevated thyroid and do have some. I am 78 years old and am just curious more than anything. I have had more energy and less pain since starting the thyroid medication.

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

There is an organ in the brain called the pituitary that sends a message to the thyroid gland in the neck to tell it to make thyroid hormone.

The organ in the brain makes TSH which goes to the thyroid and the presence of the TSH tells the thyroid gland--Make thyroid hormone.

Disease of the thyroid can either have low levels of thyroid hormone coming out of the thyroid gland or high levels.

Graves is an autoimmune disease which means that the body is essentially fighting against itself.
In Graves the body makes abnormal chemicals (antibodies) that go to the thyroid gland to tell it make more and more thyroid hormone. In graves, the thyroid hormone levels are increased, this is not the case for you.

You do not likely have graves because your levels are low, this the reason you are taking hormone replacement, your levels need replacing

Graves is only one type of thyroid disease, there are more.

I hope this helps
