How Can Diastasis Recti After Pregnancy Be Treated?

Hi, whats the best way to treat rectus muscle separation? I had a very big baby 21 years ago and my stomach has never recovered. I exercise regularly and have very good muscle tone everywhere else except for my lower abdomen. Is surgery the best solution for me?

Hi,

Diastasis Recti is a condition of the abdominal muscles that separate, which can occur after pregnancy.
Physiotherapy could help to a certain extent in most cases. The following exercises are often recommended to help build abdominal strength, but it may or may not help reduce the size of diastasis recti.
1. Core contraction
2. Seated squeeze
3. Head lift
4. Upright push-up
5. Squat against wall
6. Squat with squeeze.

It should be noted that incorrect exercises can increase the diastasis recti separation. All corrective exercises should be in the form of pulling in of the abdominal muscles rather than a pushing of them outwards. Consultation of a professional physiotherapist is recommended for correct exercise routines.

Non-invasive muscle stimulation by high-intensity focused electromagnetic field has been found to be beneficial to reduce diastasis recti.

In extreme cases, diastasis recti are corrected by a surgical procedure known as an abdominoplasty.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
