Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is around 80 years old. A recent CT-Head without contrast - (2) indicates involutional changes with no evidence of acute intracranial haemorrhage, established infarct or mass effect. The clinical indication is Dementia. My question is how can it be cured. She has lost sense of direction and forgets to even find where the toilet is at the home. Her diet is normal but has lost weight.
Involutional changes in brain are very common in elderly due to atrophy of brain parenchyma. This is normal in elderly people and sometimes causes poor memory and impairment of cognitive functions such as loss of judgment. Unfortunately there is no medicine available to treat such senile dementia. Some medicines are used for this purpose such as ginkgo biloba and piracetam, but its effectiveness is doubtful. It is better to avoid medicines having doubtful efficacy in view of old age. What she needs is care and affection from family members. Loss of weight might be due to poor food intake. Advice 1. Increase food intake 2. Food should include high protein such as egg white, cheese, milk, pulses and meat 3. Consult an eye specialist and get checked vision I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question Thanks
