How Can Degenerative Disk Disease Be Treated?

I have Degenerative Disk Disease in which I have been taking shots in my back for the pass five years..it is not getting better and probably wont, but all of a sudden i started having severe cramps in my calfs, the kind that make you want to cry....I used a hand held massager on them and it went away after awhile, but I am really scared they will come back and I am more scared of that pain than the one I have learned to live with in my spine...What can I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
The spasms you get in calf muscles could be due to-
-electrolyte defeciency (sodium/ calcium),vitamin D,E defeciency
- muscular weakness due to over exertion/lack of useor exercises
-irritation of nerves suplying muscle at spinal or local level
*fomentation/muscle stretch to combat the cramp along with local massage &local pain killer medications are suggestions for self care.
*Investigations to pin point cause with expert advise of a physician/nurosurgeon/orthopedic surgeon/physiotherapist (as per need)would help in management.
Thanks.
