How Can Cough, Wheezing, And Breathlessness Of An Infant Be Treated?

We have a 5 month old boy who seems to have contracted a cold or flu. He has excessive mucus and is coughing and wheezing horribly. He is struggling to breath and hasn't slept much in 3 days. He has a mild fever at 99.7. We called our doctor and he said not to take him in until his fever reaches 100. The little guy is really struggling to breath and stop coughing. Is there anything we can do to help him or make him better?

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through your description and I can understand your concerns.

The symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of ARI (Acute respiratory tract infection). You don't need to worry too much as it can be cured completely with timely treatment.

I suggest you to consult a pediatrician and get the following thing done:-
1.You can give him paracetamol syrup for fever, the dose which depends on the weight of your kid.
2.Do routine blood investigation and urine investigation.
3.A short course of antibiotic therapy can be given empirically using amoxicillin or azithromycin.
4.Nasal decongestants would provide symptomatic relief.
5.If breathing difficulty is there, nebulization using bronchodialtor and oxygen may be needed.
6.Salbutamol containing cough syrups can be given to clear the mucus and secretions. Do not use codeine containing cough suppressants.
If the symptoms persist despite all these,a chest X-ray may be needed to rule out pneumonia.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
