How Can Cold And Nasal Congestion Be Treated?

I am currently with a cold, in the past, it generally gets out of hand. Typically, I have to go to the Doctor to bring it under control. The doctor then precribes an anti-biotic. What brand or type of decongestion medicine can I take at home to prevent this, while on Synthroid medicine?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. Without being able to examine you directly, and taking proper case history I won't be able to provide you with medicine aspect because of the following reason:

i. It could be possible that you are actually suffering from an upper respiratory problem [sinusitis] for which consultation with an ENT physician is essential, till then

ii. till then:

- steam inhalation to help loosen thick mucus.
- regular nasal rinses.
- Avoid heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking, potato, green leafy vegetables. Cold water/food
-Take old brown rice, soup of moong dal, black grapes, cow’s or goat milk, garlic, lukewarm water to drink, black pepper, dried ginger, honey.

PS. The only OTC [over the counter] decongestant available are phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine in tablet form, and other forms of decongestant are prescribed drugs thus consult with your primary care provider to exclude any drug interaction with synthyroid.
