How Can Cold And Cough Be Treated?

I had the flu with upper respiratory symptoms beginning December 24th. After about a month of that, especially the coughing, it finally began to go away. Then last week I got what appeared to be a cold but the coughing flared up again. I can manage the nasal drip but the coughing is out of control. My temp is running about 97 degrees and I would like to know if there is something more i should be doing?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
As per your description it seems that you are probably having initial stages of respiratory tract infection.
No need to worry regarding this and complete cure is possible with timely treatment.
If I were your treating physician I would do the following as an initial line of management.:
1.Start a short course of antibiotics like amoxicillin for five to seven days.
2.You can have paracetamol for pain and discomfort.
3.Expectrent cough syrup is effective to control cough and clear secretions.
4.Antihistamines and nasal decongestants for symptomatic relief.
If symptoms persist despite all these you have to do the following:
1.A chest X-ray to assess the severity of illness.
2.Baseline investigations like CBC(complete blood count)
In resistant cases you may require intravenous antibiotics depending upon the severity of the illness.Your treating physician decide the treatment options based on your disease condition.
Holpe this information helpful to you.
